Al Gore Needs Better Analysis

July 20th, 2008

We applaud Al Gore’s plan for Energy Independence. We have worked hard to make the numbers work.

Don’t be a “fossil fool”; support a roadmap that makes sense. Energy Independence Day…2040.

Energy Expert Says Gore Plan is Not SufficientI believe the timing is perfect for our companies to get together to explore mutually beneficial business opportunities.

Minneapolis – July 18, 2008 – “Wind and other renewable energy sources are not enough,” says chemical engineer and energy expert Joseph Shuster.  “Al Gore, T Boone Pickens and the leaders of this country need to stop presenting inconsequential band aid solutions and embrace nuclear energy as the backbone of an energy plan that will lead us away from fossil fuels to energy independence.”

Shuster’s plan is outlined in his new book Beyond Fossil FoolsThe Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040 and it presents an attainable and affordable solution. All profits from this book go to energy research.

Shuster’s Plan includes:

•Vigorously support a combination wind, solar and nuclear energy (fast neutron reactors) by 2040.

•Transform transportation as rapidly as possible, away from internal combustion engines to hybrid plug-ins and all-electric vehicles.

•Aggressively develop biofuels from non-food sources such as cellulosic ethanol and algae biodiesel.

According to Shuster, Mr. Gore’s proposed 10-year plan is not possible because “we can’t get there with wind turbines (need over a million in the U.S.) or any other intermittent energy source. We need a more expansive plan that includes building nuclear power plants.” Shuster adds, “Ultimately, the government must facilitate the inevitable inclusion of nuclear power or we won’t even get there in 30 years.”

Joseph Shuster is frustrated by Gore’s constant attention to global warming and says it is just one dramatic symptom among many of the problems of burning fossil fuels. “The only viable way to end human-caused global warming is to stop using them and move to a combination of nuclear, solar and wind energy. The transition to new renewable energy sources must be completed by 2040 or conventional oil reserves will run out. A 50-year transition will result in certain and severe economic hardship.”

Wise Beyond Her Years

June 24th, 2008

After reading ”Beyond Fossil Fools”  I found the problems/solutions in the book remarkable, and almost surreal in a way.  Being only 16, I’ve only just begun learning about the world’s dilemma with fossil fuels, but with the help of this book I have come to understand that these problems have no simple solution as most would hope they would.  The message that I am getting from Mr. Shuster is that with everyone making one small step towards the use of renewable energy we, as a nation can become energy independent by 2040.  Shuster seems to have a strong and certain understanding of how to go about these world-wide affairs with sensible and environmental friendly solutions.  I loved this book and I think that for many others, reading what he has to say will be a relief from what they’ve been seeing and hearing these past few years!

Good Luck!

Sincerely,

Minneapolis Entrepreneur Draws International Attention Chemical Engineer Reveals His Plan for Energy Independence

Minneapolis, MN – Reuters and CNBC are among the major national print and broadcast media outlets listening to what Joe Shuster is saying. In  May of 1973, Shuster alerted the U.S. Congress to the possibility of an energy crisis. The Oil Embargo followed within months. Later that year, he corresponded with then-Senator Hubert H. Humphrey about legislation to develop new sources of energy.

Now – 25 years later – Shuster sees another energy crisis. He says it’s time Americans stop kidding themselves and end their dependence on foreign oil. Shuster’s frustration with the government’s inaction has prompted him to come up with his own plan.

His extensive research and resulting plan is published in a new book entitled Beyond Fossil Fools – The Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040.

Here’s what members of the national and Minnesota media are reporting:

Reuters  – Shuster  says the solution is clear and his book proposes a quantified plan and a timetable for moving beyond fossil foolishness. (Shuster says) “Energy produced by the wind, the sun and nuclear power is available, affordable, attainable, clean and renewable.”

CNBC – In his book, Shuster states that the certain way to save huge volumes of oil and gasoline is through a rapid transition to all plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles. He (Shuster) says, “It’s imperative that we stretch our reserves, limit pollution and decrease demand along with our deployment of wind, solar and nuclear systems.”

Star Tribune– It  is an informed and quantified look at the fast-eroding, increasingly expensive foreign oil supplies that he says will be tapped out within 40 years at best as demand increases in China, India and other fast-growing economies. – Columnist Neal St. Anthony Joe Shuster’s upcoming media appearances:Fox 9 Morning News — Thursday, June 12 at 7:30 a.m.Mondale and Jones Show — WCCO 830 AM — Monday, June 16 at 11:50 a.m.To order Beyond Fossil Fools…he Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040, go to www.beyondfossilfools.com.  Profits from the sale of this book benefit alternative energy research.

Ex-CEO sounds energy policy alarm-With a new book, a Minnesota entrepreneur is on a one-man mission to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

Joe Shuster was listening to the president of Shell Oil Co. tell a local business audience two years ago that there will be sufficient oil if only the United States would permit access to fields off the coasts of California, Florida and in the Alaska wilderness.

Shuster, 75, was scratching his head and asking impertinent questions. After the meeting, a Shell lieutenant asked Shuster who he represented.

“I represent my grandchildren,” barked Shuster, an energetic guy on a mission. “And this is what I’m doing for the rest of my life.”

Shuster is a founder and former CEO of Minnesota Valley Engineering and one-time president of the Minnesota High Tech Association. He is co-founder of several other firms, including RTI, the fast-growing recycler of used cooking oil.

The retired chemical engineer is also the author of a new book, “Beyond Fossil Fools: The Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040.”

It is an informed and quantified look at the fast-eroding, increasingly expensive foreign oil supplies that he says will be tapped out within 40 years at best as demand increases in China, India and other fast-growing economies. Shuster has been interested in energy issues since he wrote a report for Congress in 1973 predicting the Arab oil embargo and rising oil prices.

Bridging the gap

Shuster, a two-fisted fellow who grew up working poor in Chicago public housing in the 1950s, isn’t so sure about the global warming theories. Doesn’t matter.

Just the national security and financial problems with expensive, imported oil, dirty coal and dwindling supplies of natural gas should inspire the United States to move to new, renewable resources and next-generation nuclear power.

“We need to get this job done in 30 to 35 years,” said Shuster. “Conservation buys you time. If we save 25 percent of the fuel that we use in cars now, we’re out of oil, maybe, in 40 years instead of 35. We just don’t have enough domestic fuels to bridge the gap.”

The United States has vast coal resources. But it is the foulest of fuels and converting coal to synthetic fuel is a dirty, energy-intensive process, Shuster said. And industry still hasn’t made coal-fired plants clean enough to stop smog, acid rain and mercury pollution that pollutes the ocean and lakes globally.

His proposal boils down to:

• Replacing the bulk of electrical generation from coal and natural gas with a combination of wind, solar and next-generation (fast-neutron) nuclear power.

• Powering cars and trucks increasingly with hybrid-electric and plug-in electric technology.

• Supplementing dwindling oil supplies with biofuels from nonfood sources such as cellulosic ethanol, algae oil, rapeseed and other weedy vegetation.

Shuster’s analysis of data assumes projections that the United States is down to about three years’ supply of oil, excluding imports, which has left us running a $500 billion annual trade deficit and helped cut the value of the U.S. dollar by 50 percent since 2001. And he assumes that the price of oil will get high enough for the United States to exploit tough-to-get oil shale in Colorado and elsewhere.

The good news: Energy conservation and “green” technology is the fastest-growing industry in the country. And automakers and others are racing to market with energy-saving and alternative-powered vehicles. In sum, investment in these technologies will drive growth of an innovative American economy that imports less expensive oil.

“And the rest of the world will need this [technology] and we’ll need to help,” Shuster said.

A no-nonsense style

Tim Penny, the common-sense, fiscally prudent 12-year congressman from southern Minnesota who left his First District seat in 1995, said Shuster’s book explains why we must move to renewable and affordable energy over the next three decades and “how it is possible to reach the goal. The message is clear and convincing.”

Shuster, who says he is financially “comfortable,” next month will blanket Washington, state capitols and lots of other places with thousands of books. If he makes a buck, he says he’ll donate it to alternative-energy research.

Fred Zimmerman, the retired industrialist and management professor at the University of St. Thomas, said Shuster is one of the most credible, successful executives he has known, including a decade of service as fellow board members at Winnebago Industries.

“Joe has street savvy” Zimmerman said. “He is good technically and was an executive who cared about employees and customers. He distrusts pompous asses, which may have limited the number of boards he has served on.”

Shuster, a New Prague resident who also hopes the book will convince his local beer-drinking buddies that it’s time for change, is on to something important.

If people would stop chanting We Can’t they might see that strides have been made in producing American produced sustainable energy AND we … read more have huge opportunities to reduce consumption through increased efficiency. I’m taking my government bribe check and buying insulation and windows for my home. That will multiply the check 10 fold over the life of the house. I wonder how many people know about the new solar technological break through that makes printing solar panels almost as easy as printing this page? The company that did that just signed a Billion contract with Germany and is expanding production far beyond. Sorry to interrupt the We Can’t chant.

Voters and Readers

May 29th, 2008

I am being increasingly asked about which presidential candidate has the best position on energy and who I am supporting.

Here’re our my current thoughts:

My book again is “beyond fossil fools” and in that spirit I support the candidate that moves beyond political slogans and offers American taxpayers and voters a strategic plan and roadmap for achieving energy independence…My book gives the date 2040 as necessary and achievable.

This means our next president would have to provide the leadership required to make meaningful progress towards achieving this goal and have the ability to escalate the importance of this above the political fray so future leaders could continue pushing us towards complete independence.

My book could be a useful read for our next and future presidents.  I know voters will find it useful in making sure their elected officials are making the hard decisions.  This will ensure that complete energy independence by 2040 becomes a reality

I would also note as we follow the roadmap outlined in the book, it provides increasing economic and environmental benefit to us, our children, our grandchildren and generations to come.
